Water Disinfection Methods and Their Effects on Plastic Piping Systems
Besides the usual disinfection chemicals added to water by municipalities, other water disinfection chemicals and methods may be used on site in buildings. These methods may include shock treatments to sanitize a new system prior to use, for regular system cleanings, or to mitigate biological growth in an existing system. In addition, water disinfectants to supplement the municipal disinfection may also be added on site.
This presentation will provide an overview of the disinfection goals and methods, and address how secondary disinfection processes and chemicals may affect plastic piping used to distribute the water in the building.
Learning Objectives
- What common bacteria drive the need for water disinfection
- The difference between primary and secondary water disinfection
- Common disinfection techniques
- How different piping materials are impacted by the various disinfection techniques
