A Newington, NH, municipal wastewater treatment plant operated by Earth Tech Inc., a business unit of Tyco International Ltd., and a global provider of consulting, engineering and construction services, has received a 2004 National Clean Water Act Operations Excellence Award for Region I from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This is the second year an Earth Tech-run facility has been recognized with a regional EPA award.

The town of Newington, which lies 60 miles northeast of Boston, MA, won first place in the Small Secondary category (1 million gallons per day) for its wastewater treatment plant. Earth Tech has operated the facility, for which it also designed upgrades and built an expansion, since 1981.

The Newington treatment plant was nominated for the award, which recognizes outstanding operations and maintenance programs at publicly owned wastewater treatment facilities, by the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services. One winner is chosen in each of the EPA's 10 regions based on the plant size and treatment level. This honor also qualifies the Newington facility to compete for the national EPA award, which will be announced in October.
