An Alpena, MI, municipal wastewater treatment plant operated by Earth Tech Inc., a business unit of Tyco Engineered Products & Services, and a global provider of consulting, engineering and construction services, has received a 2004 National Clean Water Act Operations Excellence Award for Region V from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The city of Alpena, which was recognized by the EPA at a city council meeting, won first place in EPA Region V for the Medium Secondary category (one to 10 million gallons per day). Earth Tech has operated the wastewater treatment facility, which discharges into a fresh-water national marine sanctuary, since 1986. The annual EPA award recognizes outstanding operations and maintenance (O&M) programs at publicly owned wastewater treatment facilities. One winner is chosen in each of the EPA's 10 regions based on the plant size and treatment level.

The city of Alpena also recently extended Earth Tech's contract for an additional four years to provide O&M services for the water and wastewater utility. The plant serves about 18,000 people who live and work in the Alpena area, which is located in Northeast Michigan on Lake Huron.
