The Fire Safety Educational Memorial Fund of the NFPA has selected three students to receive scholarships, and its Fire Protection Research Foundation is initiating two new projects.

Issue: 8/03

The Fire Safety Educational Memorial Fund of the NFPA has selected Daniel W. Biro of the Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Patrick P. Dunn of Oklahoma State University, and Cheuk-wai Leung of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University to receive scholarships. A committee appointed by NFPA's Board of Directors chose the students based on their academic achievement, leadership qualities, commitment to volunteerism and intention to pursue a career in fire safety. Each scholarship is $5,000.

In other NFPA news, the Society's Fire Protection Research Foundation is initiating two new research projects, the Solid Shelf Rack Storage Protection Research Project and the Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion Research Project. The goal of the Solid Shelf Rack Storage Protection project is to identify safe, more efficient and cost-effective methods for protecting warehouse solid shelf rack storage, first by reviewing fire experience, then developing and testing new protection and storage configurations. The aim of the second project is to understand internal degradation and leakage of sprinkler system piping due to MIC and the performance of systems affected by MIC. The Foundation invites additional participation and sponsorship in this project. Contact Research Project Manager Steve Hanly at (617) 984-7284, or e-mail shanly@nfpa.org.
