The July 2022 issue of PM Engineer features a Rheem Commercial Tankless Rack System installed in a hotel mechanical room, a spot check on the commercial water heating market and much more!
The commercial water heating market has options for building owners and facility managers when it comes to selecting equipment for their facilities — tank or tankless, gas models or electric — even heat pump water heaters are seeing growth in this space. So which is the most popular? Well, it all depends on who you ask.
A little water conservation can go a long way. And as the second-most visited space in commercial buildings — just behind the lobby — the restroom and its water-saving fixtures can help lead the way when it comes to cutting back consumption.

Having completed its inaugural Water Quality Matters column series focusing on the theme, “Hot Topics in Water Quality,” the AWWA Water Quality and Technology Division’s committees look to extend the conversation by responding to a common question: “What keeps your committee members up at night?”
The state of Rhode Island has very little in common with the city of Anchorage, Alaska. Both, however, have something in common with the worldwide travel destination known as French Polynesia.
Customers with steam heating systems often ask if there is any way for them to reduce operating costs. In addition, after asking, they note there is uneven heat distribution and want that resolved, too.
After four grueling years at the Virginia Military Institute, upon graduation as an engineer, I decided to follow my own prudent path: I would find the best paying job in an area with the lowest cost of living that afforded me training opportunities. I knew myself well enough that I didn’t want to be stuck behind a desk; I desired interpersonal contact. I always aspired to be an engineering leader — and felt consulting would be the best route to that end.
Much of our learning in life comes from a consistent curiosity. Sometimes it can take years before we have an epiphany about something that may have puzzled us in the past. Experiencing that feeling of calm satisfaction wash over us after the initial spark of understanding is sometimes known as “Zen.”
All hydronic systems designed around renewable energy heat sources — as well as those designed around conventional boilers — have at least one controller that measures and responds to temperature. Common examples are temperature setpoint controllers, outdoor reset controllers, mixing controllers and differential temperature controllers. Complex systems that operate in multiple modes, or use multiple heat sources, often have several temperature-based controllers.
The 7th Emerging Water Technology Symposium (EWTS) was held in San Antonio the second week of May. The Symposium is sponsored by the leading plumbing groups: IAPMO, ASPE, PMI, World Plumbing Council, and the Alliance for Water Efficiency. This two day Symposium always has some interesting presentations.

The HYMAX Pro Dedicated Size Coupling, also known as flexible couplings, is engineered for new construction projects to provide an easy and safe means of joining same-size plain end pipes without the need for welding and/or special pipe fittings.
For installation into grooved piping systems, get hip to Milwaukee Valve’s grooved-end butterfly valve line — a fab addition to its existing high-performance and resilient-seated butterfly valve family, the company says.
The re-SOLVER is a high performance, self-acting, adjustable thermostatic recirculation valve that automatically and continuously controls water flow on an individual loop.
The new LOKX System Ductile Iron Fitting from GF Piping Systems features an internal self-restraining gasket that eliminates pipe-to-pipe and pipe-to-fitting separation, even at high pressures.
Bee Valve Push-in fittings feature FDA/NSF compliance, are quick and easy to use and re-use, and are resistant to inorganic chemicals, oils, fats and synthetic detergents, the company says.
The new 225TV Tapping Valve is available in sizes 4"-12". This resilient wedge valve, with a 250 psi-rated water working pressure, has interior and exterior fusion bonded epoxy coating to AWWA C550 standards.
