In a previous column last year, I identified a change in definition, by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), regarding showerheads, body sprays and safety shower showerheads. In December 2020, during the Trump administration, DOE basically redefined “showerhead” as a single device that discharges water. Hence, if you installed two showerheads installed on a single shower valve, DOE would consider them two showerheads.

The American Supply Association (ASA) recently joined the Alliance for Water Efficiency in its appeal to the United States Department of Energy related to allowable flow-rate changes for multi-head showers, and the subsequent negative affects it will have on business operations for ASA members, as well as overall negative water-efficiency consequences that will result.
Most plumbing manufacturers thought when DOE proposed the rule, it was nice but had very little chance of being finalized. That is why it was so shocking when on Dec. 8, 2020, the final rule was signed into law.
COVID-19 has added some interesting discussions to our daily life. I received a phone call regarding the amount of water used to wash our hands for 20 seconds. It is fascinating how everyone now understands that 20 seconds is required for proper handwashing.
