A member of SFPE since 1977, Fleming has served the Society in a wide number of areas, including the Qualifications Board, Ethics Committee, Technical Steering Committee, and Editorial Advisory Board. In 1995, he was made an SFPE Fellow, representing a distinguished group of members who have attained significant stature and accomplishment in engineering. He also served as President of the SFPE New York Metropolitan Chapter in 1982-83 and was recognized by that chapter as its Engineer of the Year for 1992-93.

Also, Fleming served six years on the National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA) Standards Council as a member and an additional six years as chairman. He was awarded the NFPA’s Standards Medal in 1998 and the Paul Lamb Award in 2006.
