Either due to form or function or both, the new Prosumer wants the very best for their home and has turned to professional-grade products to achieve this. In response to this demand, many companies have cross-marketed their product selection usually reserved for commercial applications to a whole new series of product lines that offer the same technology, yet are designed specifically for residential use.

As technology advances, so does the demand for a more technologically advanced home. Up until recently, the most advanced products were only available for commercial and professional applications such as hotels, restaurants and airports. Therefore, the general residential consumer was unable to obtain the latest in technology, due mainly to code and building restrictions. But that did not stop this growing market demand, which has become known as the Prosumer.

A Prosumer is easily translated as the "professional consumer."
