Jobtrak.com, an online job listing service, reports that college students entering the engineering field in 1999, had an average starting salary of $42,281, up 3% from 1998, and well above the $34,433 average starting salary for other majors. Based on the results of Jobtrak's Engineering Index, there was a 2.8% increase in total job openings for engineers in 1999 over 1998. Broken down by area of specialization, the index reported the following average starting salaries:

  • Electrical engineers, $45,691

  • Mechanical engineers, $44,166

  • Chemical engineers, $44,033

  • Technology-related engineers, $42,229

  • Industrial engineers, $39,750

  • Civil Engineers, $37,543
