In the January 2014 issue of PM Engineer, read about the geothermal applications for Northeast schools, get a better understanding of the no-lead law, and read about how you can avoid pipe corrosion. Also, check out the latest products for the plumbing and mechanical indsutry, who's new to the magazine and read the interview with IAPMO's Russ Chaney.
Talk about making the grade. Two educational facilities in the Northeast dug deep and selected geothermal applications to provide heating and cooling for their campuses.
Recently, pme interviewed Russ Chaney, CEO of The IAPMO Group, about his organization that develops the Uniform Plumbing, Mechanical, Swimming Pool and Solar Energy Codes, tests and certifies plumbing and mechanical products in the United States and overseas.
In April 2010, the U.S. Department of Energy issued new efficiency standards for residential storage water heaters — gas-fired, oil-fired and electric — and gas-fired tankless water heaters. These efficiency standards become effective in April 2015.
Even with new products on the back burner, still plenty to see at Greenbuild 2013.

After walking the Greenbuild 2013 exhibitor hall Nov. 20-21 it became evident that major manufacturers did not pack as many new products or technologies for the Philadelphia incarnation of the premier sustainable building trade show.
Corrosion of metals is an ever-present problem in the plumbing industry. Common piping materials such as copper, steel and cast iron are readily oxidized and thus undergo aqueous corrosion at a rate according to the corrosion potential of the service environment.
Welcome to 2014. I certainly hope you had an amazing holiday season filled with quality family time. Despite a hectic travel schedule thanks to my family spread throughout the nation, I had a wonderful end of 2013. My holiday season included stops to Washington D.C., southern New Jersey, Milwaukee and a visit from our Michigan-based family.
I was lucky to have had as one of my teachers the late, great Gil Carlson. He was Bell & Gossett’s director of technical services and when he would come to New York City to speak at an ASHRAE event, my old boss would ask me to sit with Gil and keep him company during the day.
One of the questions I have been fielding for the last few months is: How will the new federal no-lead law impact me as the engineer? Technically, it won’t impact you. But practically, you need to change the way you specify. Let me explain. As of Jan. 4, the law prohibits any product introduced into commerce for potable water to contain more than 0.25% lead. This is what has been identified as no-lead, lead-free or low-lead.
I like working with the control techs in our industry. They have such a passion for their craft. If left alone, they will control or monitor everything that moves, slides, shakes or switches. However, I do rein them in a bit when controlling a hydronic heating system. Several hard limits and a couple danger zones should be heeded. Of course, these should be verified with the boiler manufacturer.
While much of America’s future economic dynamism has been riveted on the overdue upgrading of the nation’s infrastructure (pipelines, bridges, dams, railroads and highways), little has been heard lately regarding commercial and industrial construction.
