ASPE will be hosting a full-day workshop exclusively for its young professionals on Thursday, Oct. 19 during the ASPE Technical Symposium Oct. 19-22 at the Hotel Bonaventure Montreal.

Entitled “What They Didn’t Teach You in College,” and presented by Deirdre Gilmore, an expert in business development, career growth and strategic planning in the AEC community, the ASPE Young Professionals Leadership Academy will educate attendees on:

  • Presentation skills to lead meetings and win project interviews;

  • Tools for effective public speaking;

  • How to manage the intricacies of networking, meal etiquette and tricky business situations;

  • Key leadership skills to grow personally;

  • Ways to develop (and maintain) strong, enduring relationships in your profession;

  • How to identify personal and professional goals; and

  • How emotional intelligence can improve and strengthen business (and personal) relationships.

In other ASPE news, the organization announced it is providing scholarships to three deserving college students. The recipients of Alfred Steele scholarships are:

  • Rachel Gendich, who is studying architectural engineering at Lawrence Technological University in Southfield, Mich., and has a 3.0 grade-point average, received $3,000;

  • Samantha Falkowski, who is studying industrial and systems engineering at the University of Rhode Island and has a 3.2 GPA, received $1,500; and

  • Cyrus Blackmore, who is currently undeclared at Purdue and has a 4.0 GPA, received $500.

“The Education Committee did a very thorough review of the applications and each candidate was ranked based on the information they provided,” ASPE President Mitch Clemente, CPD, FASPE, said. “The committee was very impressed with the candidates’ achievements and goals and determined three applicants should be recognized this year. The committee assigned a monetary value based on the applicants’ ranking and the board of directors unanimously approved the recommendations.”

Finally, AB&I Foundry joined the organization’s Affiliate Sponsor program as part of Tyler Pipe & Coupling’s renewal program for the next year.
