Smith, a salesman for the National Lead Co., formed the corporation in New York City in 1926. In the 1930s, an expansion into marine products precipitated a move to Newark, NJ, under the leadership of Jay R. Smith. Growth and expansion after World War II resulted in a move to Union, NJ, and the company moved again in 1962 to Piscataway, NJ. A third generation of the Smith family then joined the firm, Jay L. Smith II. Then in 1978, the company moved to its present location in Montgomery, AL. The plant is situated on a 33-acre site in the Gunter Industrial Park, and contains over 210,000 sq. ft. of office, manufacturing and warehouse space.
