Analysis of stimulus data points to the program delivering more construction jobs than initially estimated. New federal reports show the $20.6 billion worth of stimulus highway projects initiated over the past 12 months have saved or created nearly 280,000 direct construction jobs, which amounts to 15,000 jobs per billion dollars invested (well above pre-stimulus estimates of 9,700 direct construction jobs per $1 billion invested). T & S Brass Honored
T & S Brass was recognized with a sustainability award for its B-0108 spray valve at the recent InnoVision Technology Awards. The awards focus exclusively on celebrating achievements in innovation and technological excellence in the South Carolina Upstate region. World Plumbing Day
World Plumbing Day will take place March 11 and has been established to help the general public better understand the vital role the plumbing industry plays in protecting public health and safety, and the extent to which the plumbing industry helps limit mankind's enviornmental footprint. This year, the inaugural event will be announced at a press conference in Beijing, China on March 11 as part of ISH China 2010.

Speakers Sought For Ecobuild Conference
AEC Science & Technology is now accepting speaker proposals for Ecobuild America 2010, slated for Dec. 6-10 in Washington, DC. Sponsored by the National Institute of Building Sciences, proposals are sought for conference seminars or panel discussions that feature real-world, solutions-based case studies and/or management discussions within the four conference tracks: 1. Building Information Modeling (BIM) & Information Technology; 2. Building Performance & Energy Efficiency; 3. Green Building & Sustainable Design; 4. Sustainable Sites & Infrastructure. If you are interested in speaking at Ecobuild 2010, complete the online submission form. Deadline is March 15.

U.S. Science and Engineering Report Card
According to the latest report from the National Science Board, the state of science and engineering in the U.S. is strong, yet the nation's lead is shrinking, due in part to rapidly increasing capabilities in China and other Asian economies.

The Country's Best Engineering Schools
U.S. News & World Report recently released its 2010 top 10 undergraduate engineering schools (not offering engineering Ph.D.'s). Harvey Mudd College (Claremont, Calif.) ranked first on the list, followed by Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (Terre Haute, Ind.) and Cooper Union (New York City).

ASHRAE New Green Building Standard Course
ASHRAE is offering an updated online seminar revewing the new green building standard (Standard 189.1, Standard for the Design of High-Performance, Green Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings) and its requirements. The course takes place March 15 and is taught by Tom Lawrence, a member of the committee that developed the standard. The three-hour-long courses are taught in real time from 1-4 p.m. (EDT) and feature interactive audio. Three professional development hours or American Institute of Architects learning units or 0.3 continuing education units are available for each course. MADCAD.com Selected For Building Codes & Standards Online Access
The U.S. Department of Defense awarded MADCAD.com a one-year subscription contract for online access to more than 800 building codes and standards from ASHRAE, ASME, BHMA, ICC and NFPA. The contract will provide architects, engineers, specifiers and facility managers at the Naval Facilities Engineering Command, U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Air Force Civil Engineering Support Agency, and U.S. Air Force Center for Enviornmental Excellence with access to non-government standards that are referenced in the Unified Facilities Guide Specifications (UFGS).

ASHRAE Building Efficiency Conference
ASHRAE will host a conference entitled "Existing Buildings in Urban America: Dramatically Cutting the Waste Energy" April 19-20 at the Grand Hyatt in New York City. The conference seeks to educate building design and operating professionals, building owner and managers and government officials about the theoretical and practical matters associated with major improvements in the energy efficiency of existing buildings.

Laars_-_Bill_RootRoot Moves Up At Laars
William (Bill) Root has been appointed vice president and general manager for Laars Heating Systems Co. He assumes the role following the retirement of Angelo Sinisi. Root joined Laars in 1998 and soon assumed the title of vice president, sales and marketing. Shortly after Bradford White's acquisition of Laars in 2005, Root was instrumental in helping Laars introduce many new commercial and residential boilers as well as volume water heating products and controls. Also, Laars announced the hiring of Chuck O'Donnell as product marketing manager. He has more than 11 years of experience in engineering, applications and marketing management, and is helping to develop new product concepts and market strategies for Laars.

Victaulic announced that Eric Luftig has joined the company as director of marketing and communications. In addition to serving as a company spokesperson, Luftig will direct integrated marketing efforts in key markets and ensure consistency and effectiveness in defining and developing the Victaulic brand and corporate identity. Before joining Victaulic, Luftig led the sales, marketing and product management efforts for the Plastic Films Technologies Division at Scholle Materials.

PMI-Charles-HernandezPMI Hires Technical Specialist
The Plumbing Manufacturers Institute (PMI) has hired Charles Hernandez as technical specialist. Hernandez will be responsible for fielding and researching members' technical questions, analyzing and reporting on proposed code and standard changes and attending and monitoring code and standard hearings and meetings. Hernandez most recently worked as an independent consultant, providing guidance on project management, efficiency improvements and maintenance management. He also has worked with the Illinois Labor Relations Board as a board member.
