News In Brief

WaterSense to Label First Commercial Building Product WaterSense
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) WaterSense program has announced its first product labeling effort for commercial building products with the release of a draft specification for high-efficiency flushing urinals-those that are 50% more efficient than the current federal standard of 1gpf. To ensure adequate performance, urinals must comply with existing standards for flushing urinals and need to be tested for trap seal restoration and flush effectiveness before they can earn the WaterSense label. The EPA estimates that nationwide, older, inefficient urinals waste nearly 45 billion gallons of water annually.

New NIBCO DURA-PEX Facility in Lebanon, OH
NIBCO has announced that it is combining its PEX extrusion operation and post-processing/distribution operations into a new facility in Lebanon, OH. The 130,000-sq.-ft. facility allows for expansion of manufacturing and distribution operations and will increase efficiency of manufacturing operations. In May 2006, NIBCO acquired the assets of Consolidated Plumbing Industries, a manufacturer of cross-linked polyethylene (PEX) tubing. The acquisition was a strategic move in expanding NIBCO's presence in the PEX water distribution and radiant heating markets.

Habitat for Humanity Founder Dies
Millard Fuller, 74, the driving force in founding Habitat for Humanity in 1976, died unexpectedly Feb. 2. HFH is a nonprofit organization that was started in little Americus, GA, but whose name has become known around the world. The families who live in the houses must help build them alongside volunteers, and they must pay back a no-interest loan that makes the housing affordable. The organization has built more than 300,000 houses for the poor in the U.S. and around the world. Fuller split from HFH in 2005 and founded the Fuller Center for Housing in Americus, which was doing the same work. Despite a recent illness, Fuller kept a busy schedule and had recently visited El Salvador.

Fire Suppression System ANSUL
The ANSUL AQUASONIC water-atomizing fire suppression system is a revolution in Class B fire protection technology. It features a pair of supersonic atomizers that can produce 1.5 trillion water droplets per second - equivalent to covering an Olympic-sized soccer field in one minute. The high-performance system utilizes non-toxic and readily available extinguishing media (water and nitrogen) and is specifically engineered to protect special hazard applications, including flammable liquid storage areas and machinery spaces.

BriggsLine of Water Saving Toilets
Briggs Industries has introduced a trio of high-efficiency toilets, designed to reduce water consumption. Briggs has gained EPA certification for its new dual-flush HET, The Conserver, which enables user selection of either 1.0 or 1.6 gpf, achieving an average water savings of 20% compared to typical toilets. A second design, The Maelstrom Max HET, provides powerful one-flush performance, using only 1.28 gpf. Briggs' third new Turbo 3 Flush-assisted model, The Renovi HET, combines value pricing with 1.28 gpf water conservation.
