PHCP Wholesalers' Sales Up 3.4% In October The Canadian Institute of Plumbing & Heating's October Wholesalers' Sales Report shows total product sales up 3.4% or $16.4 million compared to October 2007. Final WTC 7 Report: Fire-Induced Collapse Destroyed Building
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has released its final report on the Sept. 11, 2001, collapse of the 47-story World Trade Center building 7. The report contains clarifications and supplemental text suggested by organizations and individuals worldwide in response to the draft WTC 7 report, released in August. The revisions did not alter the investigation team's major findings, which include identification of fire as the primary cause for the building's failure. The three-year investigation found that heating of floor beams and girders on multiple floors caused a critical support column to fail, initiating a fire-induced progressive collapse [drawing] that
brought the building down.
Fire Protection Research Council Sets Top Priorities
At the Automatic Fire Sprinkler Protection Research Council's first meeting this fall, more than 30 priority research needs were idetified and proritized by participants. The top five priorities identified were: residential sprinkler performance criteria (including single sprinkler design, impact of ceiling geometry, fire flow calculations and other topics); protection of expanded group A plastics; burning characteristics of commodities (including storage configuration issues); storage under sloped ceilings; and suppression design for final extinguishment.

Rushing, an MEP engineering and sustainability consulting firm, has appointed Julaine Fleetwood
to the newly created role of director of marketing and client services. Fleetwood's experience includes nearly 20 years providing marketing and management services for the engineering and construction industry, including 18 years with a national multidiscipline engineering and program/construction management firm.
Tom Reed, one of ECR's founding fathers, has retired. Reed [photo] became president of Dunkirk Radiator Corp. in 1980. In 1989, he focused on expanding the distribution of the company's own brand of boilers (then called Blue Circle).
Within about 4 years, the size of the company more than doubled. In the early 1990s, Reed acquired Ultimate Engineering and the Pennco Co. He also initiated an R&D program that designed the first wet-recuperated condensing boiler for the residential market in the world and the first residential condensing boiler in North America. In 1999, Reed led
the Dunkirk side of the merger with the Utica Boiler Companies to create what is now ECR International.
Greg Shaw has been appointed the new global vice president of human resources at Sloan Valve Co. Shaw, who has more than 23 years of professional experience in sectors such as manufacturing, distributor, retail and non-profit, will be responsible for implementing people strategies addressing human capital development, performance management and other critical HR initiatives. |
