News In Brief

Water Worries
FMI Corp. believes w
ater will become an increasingly important concern in our nation. In a recent Construction Outlook newsletter, construction economist Heather Jones says that a ging infrastructure, population growth and net migration are fueling demand for new and replacement construction, especially in the Sunbelt and Rustbelt regions. She predicts water supply and sewage and waste disposal construction will increase by 2% and 3%, respectively, in 2008 and by 2% and 4%, respectively, in 2009 despite a decrease in state and federal revenues.

Solar Panels Installed on Vatican Roof Vatican Goes Solar
Several solar panels have been installed on top of the papal audience hall at Vatican City, reports the Associated Press. The voltaic cells convert sunlight into electricity. In sunny Rome, engineers say the cells will produce enough electricity to illuminate, heat or cool the hall, which is used for weekly papal audiences during winter and other times of year when the weather is bad.

NFPA Begins $6 Million Endowment for Research Foundation
The National Fire Protection Association recently announced the establishment of a $6 million endowment for the Fire Protection Research Foundation. The Foundation, an affiliate of NFPA, is an independent nonprofit that plans, manages, and communicates consortium-funded research on a broad range of fire safety issues in collaboration with scientists and laboratories around the world. Research findings are also used by NFPA codes and standards technical committees as they develop new documents and update existing versions.

Out-of-the-Wall Support System for PEX-a Uponor
Uponor's ProPEX Out-of-the-Wall Support System provides a complete solution for PEX-a plumbing systems. The system includes a plastic bend support that snaps into a mating, 18"-wide wall support bracket, offering secure mounting for ½" PEX from any angle. For ¾" PEX, an installer only needs the wall support bracket for straight-through access. To complete the system, the installer uses a flared plastic escutcheon to conceal the penetration and the ProPEX connection, which lies entirely outside the wall.

FluidmasterNext Generation of Fill Valves
Fluidmaster makes the PRO 45AR and the PRO 45HR fill valves, which are engineered with special inserts that adjust the water refill rates specific to toilet models. If a fill rate is set too high, a flush can deliver too much water to the bowl, resulting in wasted water down the drain. If set too low, the fill rate may produce an incomplete flush and the need for an additional, water-wasting flush.

All-Polymer Solar Hot Water System FAFCO
FAFCO Inc. introduces the SunGrabber, a lightweight, all-polymer, solar hot water system designed to reduce water heating bills by up to 50%. SunGrabber uses a proprietary differential temperature controller that works to control the pumping module and impedes the overheating or freezing of water in the polymer tubing. The SunGrabber is designed to work with any conventional residential hot water tank. The entire system fits in a single box and weighs just 70 pounds.
